Stainless Steel & Gunmetal Jewelry Care

Thoughtful care to preserve the beauty and finish of your stainless steel and gunmetal jewelry.

Understanding Stainless Steel & Gunmetal

Stainless steel is a durable, corrosion-resistant metal that maintains its appearance with relatively simple care. Although resistant to rust and tarnishing, it can still develop scratches, surface residue, or discoloration with exposure to certain chemicals and environments.

Gunmetal jewelry features a distinctive dark metallic finish, often achieved through plating or a surface treatment. This finish requires more delicate handling, as friction, moisture, and everyday wear may gradually affect its appearance.

Because these materials have different finishes, their cleaning and care requirements are not always the same.

Wearing Your Jewelry

To help preserve your jewelry:

  • Apply perfumes, lotions, cosmetics, and hair products before putting on your jewelry.

  • Remove jewelry before swimming, showering, exercising, or using household cleaning products.

  • Avoid prolonged contact with moisture, perspiration, chlorine, and harsh chemicals.

  • Protect gunmetal finishes from repeated rubbing, scratching, and contact with hard surfaces.

  • Gently wipe your jewelry after wearing to remove surface oils and residue.

While stainless steel is generally durable, gunmetal-plated finishes require additional care to minimize premature wear.

Cleaning Stainless Steel Jewelry

For plain, uncoated stainless steel jewelry:

  1. Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with lukewarm water.

  2. Gently clean the surface using a soft cloth.

  3. Remove soap residue with a clean, lightly dampened cloth.

  4. Dry completely with a soft, lint-free cloth before storing.

Avoid abrasive cleaners, steel wool, stiff brushes, and harsh chemical solutions that may scratch or damage the finish.

For pieces containing gemstones, pearls, vintage military buttons, adhesives, or other delicate components, avoid soaking and contact our studio if additional cleaning is needed.

Cleaning Gunmetal Jewelry

Gunmetal finishes should be cleaned more gently than plain stainless steel.

  • Wipe the jewelry with a clean, soft, dry cloth after wearing.

  • Avoid soaking, scrubbing, or using abrasive polishing cloths.

  • Do not use metal polish, silver dips, ultrasonic cleaners, or chemical cleaning solutions.

  • If additional cleaning is necessary, contact our studio for guidance specific to your piece.

Avoid polishing gunmetal jewelry to restore shine, as polishing may remove or alter the dark surface finish.

Storing Your Jewelry

Store stainless steel and gunmetal jewelry in a clean, dry location, preferably in a soft pouch or lined jewelry box.

Keep pieces separate to minimize scratches and prevent contact between different metal finishes. Avoid prolonged exposure to humidity and direct sunlight.

For gunmetal-plated pieces, individual storage is particularly helpful in protecting the finish from unnecessary friction.

Understanding Natural Wear

Stainless steel is durable but not scratchproof. Over time, regular use may produce minor surface marks.

Gunmetal finishes may gradually lighten or reveal the underlying metal in areas that experience frequent contact. The rate of wear varies depending on the finish, construction, and how the piece is worn.

If you notice an unexpected change in your jewelry's appearance, our studio would be happy to help you determine whether cleaning, maintenance, or repair may be appropriate.
