Why Pearls?

Natural pearls form when an irritant - usually grit or grain of sand - works its way into an oyster. As a defense mechanism, the oyster coats the irritant in a special fluid. Over time, layer upon layer of this coating is deposited until a lustrous pearl is formed.

Army spouses also make pearls. The Army lifestyle has lots irritants and spouses have to decide in each moment how they are going to handle them.

Freshwater pearls take between 1 to 6 years to form, whereas saltwater pearls may take between 5 to 20 years. This is significant because this timeline parallels the life-cycle of many Army spouses. When Army spouses are ‘fresh’ (in the first 1 to 6 years), they handle these irritants with curiosity and adventure. They hold down the home while their soldiers are away at their first training exercise - it is exciting! After making pearls for 5 to 20 years, calling veteran Army spouses salty wouldn’t go well, so they are reverently called ‘seasoned’. Seasoned spouses take a career of unpredictable moves, countless separations, and anxiety-inducing unknowns and turn them into something beautiful.
